Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Technological Decline.

The recent US security policy document offers a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas represent an grave risk to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses considerable strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. But, without decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
