At least thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the country's president.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
